Statement of Egg Safety Center on Egg Recall by Wright County Egg

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

crwe-newswire

ALPHARETTA, Ga., Aug. 14 (CRWENEWSWIRE) — Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling specific Julian dates of shell eggs produced by their farms because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a food-borne bacteria. The company is making this voluntary recall of products because testing at the company’s farm showed some of the eggs may contain the bacteria.

Consumers should return the eggs in the original carton to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Eggs affected by this recall were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute nationwide.

Eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 225 and plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1946 223.

Consumers are reminded that properly storing, handling and cooking eggs should help prevent food-borne illness. The Egg Safety Center and the Food and Drug Administration recommend that eggs should be fully cooked until both the yolks and the whites are firm, and consumers should not eat foods that may contain raw or undercooked eggs. For more information on proper handling and preparation of eggs and answers to other frequently asked questions, visit www.eggsafety.org.

The chance of an egg containing Salmonella Enteritidis is rare in the United States. Several years ago, it was estimated that 1 in 20,000 eggs might have been contaminated, which meant most consumers probably wouldn’t come in contact with such an egg but 1 time in 84 years. Since that time most U.S. egg farmers have been employing tougher food safety measures to help protect against food-borne illness. Chief among these methods are modern, sanitary housing systems; stringent rodent control and bio-security controls; inoculation against Salmonella Enteritidis; cleaning and sanitization of poultry houses and farms; and testing.

About the Egg Safety Center

The Egg Safety Center provides scientifically accurate information on food safety issues related to eggs. We work with egg producers to provide them with the most up to date information available and are dedicated to educating consumers on proper food handling to reduce the incidence of food-borne illness. For more information on egg safety visit www.eggsafety.org.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO–(CRWENewswire - 07/31/10) - G. Brandt Meat Packers Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario, today announced a voluntary recall of certain ready-to-eat cooked meat products manufactured at its Mississauga, Ontario facility (Establishment number 164), produced from May 30, 2010, as they may be contaminated with Salmonella and or Listeria.

The Company is notifying retailers across Canada where the products on the following list were distributed and has asked that the products be removed from their shelves immediately.

While there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products, consumers are advised not to consume and to discard them if purchased up to July 30, 2010 from over-the-counter delis.

Food contaminated with Salmonella and or Listeria may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these organisms may cause illness, sometimes called food poisoning. Symptoms vary by organism, but can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache, dizziness and neck stiffness. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may be more at risk.

“As a Canadian family owned and operated business, public health and safety is always a top priority for Brandt Meat Packers,” said Brigitte Brandt-Welzel V.P. Sales & Marketing. “We will continue to work with the CFIA until we have a comprehensive understanding of how these contaminations may have occurred. This precautionary product recall affirms our family’s determination to continue to provide safe, wholesome, high quality meat products, and ensure the continued food safety that Canadian families have come to depend on.

“Our priority is to get these products off the shelves of retailers and distributors and to ensure consumer safety.”

In addition, Brandt has taken the additional voluntary measure of shutting down production at its Mississauga plant effective July 31, 2010 to conduct a thorough and intensive sanitation of its facilities. The Company has initiated this precautionary action, in addition to its consistently high food safety standards and protocols. It is precisely these high safety standards that enable Brandt to continue to maintain its ongoing HACCP approval.

This voluntary recall follows a similar recall of Brandt headcheese products announced, as part of an on-going CFIA investigation, on July 22, 2010.

No other Brandt products are affected.

Consumers who purchased any of these Brandt products can either return the product for a full refund at their point-of-purchase location or by contacting Brandt Meats at 1-800-387-9340 Ext 227.

Brandt Meat Products was established in 1958 and remains a Canadian family owned and operated business. Today, Brandt’s European Sausage Plant in Mississauga, Ontario, produces over 120 different sausages, salamis and hams. While Brandt’s delicious recipes go back generations, their processing practices are modern and stringent, resulting in their products having won numerous Gold Medals at International Trade Competitions. Since 2000, G. Brandt Meat Packers Limited has maintained certification from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under their Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program and continues to proudly adhere to and exceed these safety standards.
