MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO–(CRWENewswire - 07/31/10) - G. Brandt Meat Packers Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario, today announced a voluntary recall of certain ready-to-eat cooked meat products manufactured at its Mississauga, Ontario facility (Establishment number 164), produced from May 30, 2010, as they may be contaminated with Salmonella and or Listeria.

The Company is notifying retailers across Canada where the products on the following list were distributed and has asked that the products be removed from their shelves immediately.

While there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products, consumers are advised not to consume and to discard them if purchased up to July 30, 2010 from over-the-counter delis.

Food contaminated with Salmonella and or Listeria may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these organisms may cause illness, sometimes called food poisoning. Symptoms vary by organism, but can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache, dizziness and neck stiffness. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may be more at risk.

“As a Canadian family owned and operated business, public health and safety is always a top priority for Brandt Meat Packers,” said Brigitte Brandt-Welzel V.P. Sales & Marketing. “We will continue to work with the CFIA until we have a comprehensive understanding of how these contaminations may have occurred. This precautionary product recall affirms our family’s determination to continue to provide safe, wholesome, high quality meat products, and ensure the continued food safety that Canadian families have come to depend on.

“Our priority is to get these products off the shelves of retailers and distributors and to ensure consumer safety.”

In addition, Brandt has taken the additional voluntary measure of shutting down production at its Mississauga plant effective July 31, 2010 to conduct a thorough and intensive sanitation of its facilities. The Company has initiated this precautionary action, in addition to its consistently high food safety standards and protocols. It is precisely these high safety standards that enable Brandt to continue to maintain its ongoing HACCP approval.

This voluntary recall follows a similar recall of Brandt headcheese products announced, as part of an on-going CFIA investigation, on July 22, 2010.

No other Brandt products are affected.

Consumers who purchased any of these Brandt products can either return the product for a full refund at their point-of-purchase location or by contacting Brandt Meats at 1-800-387-9340 Ext 227.

Brandt Meat Products was established in 1958 and remains a Canadian family owned and operated business. Today, Brandt’s European Sausage Plant in Mississauga, Ontario, produces over 120 different sausages, salamis and hams. While Brandt’s delicious recipes go back generations, their processing practices are modern and stringent, resulting in their products having won numerous Gold Medals at International Trade Competitions. Since 2000, G. Brandt Meat Packers Limited has maintained certification from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency under their Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program and continues to proudly adhere to and exceed these safety standards.
